Specialist & Rare Variety plus Young Stock Show 2016
By Ghalib Al-Nasser, Shows Organiser

The Society staged its second combined Specialist & Rare Variety Show with the Young Stock Show which proved to be another success with an increase in total entry for the combined event of 253 from 23 exhibitors with a total of 196 benched for Steve Cox, Philip Dye & Martin Frost to judge. The show also had an international flavour to it when a family from Finland visited the show in the afternoon while they were on a week’s holiday in London. They are budgerigar fanciers themselves but in a small way.

As part of the Society’s 75th Anniversary celebration there were bespoke coloured ceramic beakers on offer to the 14 colour winners in the specialist & rare variety show and special glass trophies for the section winners in the young stock show. The judges received their ceramic beakers as well.

The show was billed as the Dennis Faulkner Memorial Show and his wife Ruby was invited to present the awards together with the Society’s president, Paul Tiller. Dennis was past president, secretary and subscription secretary of the Society and before giving up birds he was a very successful breeder and exhibitor of the lutino and albino varieties with his wife & partner Ruby.

Ghalib  &  Janice  Al-Nasser  did  very  well  in  winning  the  awards  for  best  crest,  yellowface, clearbody, pair, team & colour budgerigar while Jim Lawrie did well in winning 3 best of colour awards in the spangle green, spangle blue & double factor spangle.

Red-eyes

In the lutino section Rick Watts won the colour group with an adult lutino cock followed by Ghalib & Janice Al-Nasser’s wide headed adult hen. James Wheeler was third with an adult cock. The Al- Nasser’s won the young bird award with a hen.

Rick Watts won the first two places in the albino section with an adult cock & hen and was followed by James Wheeler in third place with a cock. Ghalib & Janice won the young bird with a cock.

Malcolm & Pam Freemantle dominated the clearwing section by winning the best yellow-wing with an adult dark green cock followed by their adult light green hen. Ann Shoosmith was third with a dark green cock. David & Linda Rafis won the young bird award with a light green hen.

In the whitewing section Malcolm & Pam Freemantle beat all other exhibitors to occupy the first three placings with a young cobalt cock, an adult cobalt hen followed by an adult cobalt cock.

Ghalib & Janice headed the crested section with a circular opaline skyblue cock. Cyril, David & Jini Sharpe from the novice section were second with a half circular yellowface skyblue cock followed by the Al-Nasser’s half circular yellowface skyblue hen in third place. Mick Baker won the young bird award with a circular skyblue cock.

Spangles

Jim Lawrie won all the spangle awards and headed the spangle green group with a light green cock which was followed by Ray Marston’s grey green cock from the intermediate section. A dark green hen was third for the beginner James Wheeler.

Jim Laurie also won the spangle blue section with a skyblue cock followed by his cinnamon cobalt hen in second place. A skyblue cock of Ray Marston was third best. Rick Watts won the young bird award with a cinnamon skyblue hen.

Jim Lawrie won his third best of colour award in the double factor spangle section with a young quality yellow hen.  James Wheeler was second with a young yellow cock. Tony & Janet Jeffrey were third with an adult yellow hen.

Ray Marston headed the dominant pied section with a skyblue hen while James Wheeler occupied the next two spots with a young clearflight dark green hen and a young light green cock.

Harry & Sue Wadley won the recessive pied group for the second year running with a violet cock followed by their dark green cock in second place. Cyril, David & Jini Sharpe were third with a grey green cock. Harry & Sue won the young bird section with a cobalt cock

Ghalib & Janice headed the yellowface group with a cinnamon skyblue hen followed by their goldenface skyblue cock in second place. John Sopp from the intermediate section was third with a skyblue cock.

Ann Shoosmith, from the novice section, had a quality rainbow hen to win the rare variety group and her young rainbow hen was third best. Splitting the two birds was Ghalib & Janice Al-Nasser’s German fallow light green cock in second place. The Sharpe’s partnership won the best slate & saddleback while David & Linda Rafis won the anthracite award.

Clearbody

Unfortunately the clearbody group was small with only 3 birds benched with Ghalib & Janice filling the first two places with a Texas clearbody grey cock and Easley clearbody light green cock. David & Linda Rafis were third with a young Texas clearbody light green cock.

There was a good entry in the any other colour group and for the second year John Sopp’s lacewing white cock won the section which enabled him to register the bird as a Coloured Champion. Malcolm & Pam Freemantle were second with a young white cobalt hen followed by John Sopp’s violet cock in third place. Ann Shoosmith won best yellow and the Sharpe partnership won best any other variety clearwing.

Ghalib & Janice won best pair with lutinos followed by Paul Tiller’s pair of yellowface cinnamon greys. They also won best team with 3 albino pairs followed by their team of 4 spangle light green cocks. The best colour budgerigar (dominant pied opaline violet hen) was won by Ghalib & Janice followed by the Sharpe partnership with a spangle dominant pied mauve cock.

Rick Watts headed the young stock show with a large skyblue cock winning best young bird and best champion young bird and his cinnamon light green hen was third best.
